The Fortuna Portal on the Old Market was formerly the entrance to the main inner
courtyard of Potsdam City Palace, the Stadtschloss. The gate was built in 1701
to mark the coronation of Frederick I as King of Prussia. It takes its name from
the gilded sculpture of the Roman goddess of fortune that crowns the dome.
Today’s building is a reconstruction, for like all the other
buildings on the Alter Markt both the City Palace and the Fortuna Portal were
badly damaged in the Second World War...
