The half-day cycling route "Alter Fritz" is ideal for discovering Potsdam and the historic sites of Potsdam's royal past when Prussian monarchs ruled and resided here. Rent a bike at the main train station (north or south side).
Cycling route: from the main train station of Potsdam (north side) you cross Lange Brücke heading toward the former City Palace's royal stables (Marstall), today's "Filmmuseum". To your right you will see the construction site of the New City Palace, which, upon completion, will accommodate the state parliament of Brandenburg, or "Landtag" and other institutions starting in 2013. Breite Straße then takes you to the steam engine building, the "Dampfmaschinenhaus", which is disguised as mosque. Go along the banks of the Havel and follow Geschwister-Scholl-Straße to reach Sanssouci Park. Before arriving at the Palace of Sanssouci you will pass the New Palace, the Orangery, and the Historic Mill. Alternatively, other designated cycling paths will take you through the park. You are then leaving the Park Sanssouci again and you go along Voltaireweg toward the Russian Colony "Alexandrovka". From there you enter the street "Am Neuen Garten" which will take you to the craft brewery and restaurant "Meierei" with a marvellous view of Potsdam's lakescape and Cecilienhof Palace. By cutting across the "Berliner Vorstadt" district you will arrive at the Dutch Quarter. The historic city centre leads you right back to the main train station of Potsdam. Well-paved bike path for 18 km, direction signs (clockwise);
