A part of England in PotsdamPeter Joseph Lenné and Karl Friedrich Schinkel did their best here as well to make Babelsberg Castle and Park an impressive eastern conclusion to Potsdam’s man-made landscape. From 1871, Babelsberg was the summer residence of William I. Over the decades, so many architects and landscape designers participated in the actual realisation of the design plans that both Babelsberg Castle and Babelsberg Park bear different trademarks. From 1833, Schinkel designed the building in the neo-Gothic style, from 1841 Ludwig Persius planned its extension until, after his death in 1845, the construction of the castle was finally completed by Johann Heinrich Strack. It was similar with the layout of the park, which extends over several hills: after Lenné, Hermann Prince Pückler-Muskau continued the planning of the landscape garden from 1843 on the basis of Lenné’s system of paths. The park is towered over by Flatowturm (a tower), which was created in the middle of the 19th century and which is based on the Eschenheimer Tor (a gate) in Frankfurt am Main.
