The historic city center

The historic city center Two of our tours are dedicated to exploring Potsdam’s city center, but of course you can also combine these tours. Each tour lasts about 2 hours. On your way there will be many opportunities to rest at cafés, restaurants or snack bars.

Tour 3
This walk begins at Potsdam’s main train station (Hauptbahnhof) and will take you into the city. This tour will challenge your creativity as you will be asked to imagine a Potsdam that was destroyed by British bombs in one night in April 1945 and by later architectural monstrosities. Nevertheless, there is still much evidence of Frederick II’s aspirations to turn Potsdam into a small but impressive royal residence. A rich and varied work of art was the result.

Tour 4
This tour leads you even deeper into Potsdam’s past. The “second Baroque city expansion” brought about two ensembles of buildings that appear to embody old Prussian virtues: built plainly and unadorned in straight rows, their sole purpose was to provide accommodation for workers and soldiers. In the “yellow” quarter, you will find rows of half-timbered houses that are typical for this region. The “red” quarter is also known as the Dutch Quarter, and the houses here are made of red brick. Many small shops, restaurants and cafés make this an especially lively part of the city.
