The Advent time and Christmas in general will look a bit different this year, not only in Potsdam, but all over the world. While we’re in this together, it will still be a huge adjustment for us that travel won’t be possible like we’re used to, family might not be close this year and Christmas won’t be part of the public life so much.

Instead, we’re inclined to focus more inward and to make this time as cosy, friendly and warm as possible. With Christmas markets, concerts and ice rinks not available to make us feel festive, it’s so important that we don’t forget the small details that make Potsdam so charming during this wondrous time:

A long walk through the parks with your tea in your hands to keep you warm is still our number one feel-good-tip whenever the weather isn’t too frightful. With the leaves all gone you might find new perspectives and discover historic vistas. The New Garden is especially lovely during winter, the Lake Heiliger See, when frozen, is a lovely spot to watch the ducks slide across the ice.

The Freundschaftsinsel in the middle of Potsdam’s city centre and just five minutes by foot from the main station is another tip we’d like to share. Grab your coffee to go (in your reusable cup, of course) from the nearby bakery and explore this little island, where nature always finds a way to look stunning, even in autumn and winter. Landscape gardener Karl Foerster made sure that shrubs are in bloom all seasons, even in winter.

Our Tourist Information centre Old Market and in the mobiagentur in Potsdam main station provide you with souvenirs for Potsdam friends who can’t visit at the moment and with gift ideas for any Potsdam lover. Cosy beanies, twinkling baubles, tasty delicacies and books, books and more books make our Tourist Informations your one-stop-shop for anything festive.

Music brings us all the joy! Cosy up on the sofa, enjoy a typical cinnamon star or gingerbread treat and listen to classical music by the Kammerakademie Potsdam. World class musicians play your favourite classic and crossover tunes, for you to enjoy at home, which also makes a great gift for anyone music obsessed.

Eating well provides us all the comfort we need during Christmas. All families have their own food-traditions and it’s the highlight of the year. The festive smells, the kitchens full of culinary goodness and sticky fingers searching for more… we love it. The most popular food on Christmas Eve in Potsdam and Brandenburg is potato salad with sausages. Fancy the recipe? Enjoy!

You need:

800 g waxy potatoes

1 onion (60 g)

100 g yogurt

1 tbsp mustard

80 g salad mayonnaise

120 g pickles

2 tablespoons of pickled cucumber stock

8 sausages

Wash 800 g waxy potatoes, cover and cook for 20 minutes, unpeeled. Finely dice 1 onion (60 g) and pour boiling water in a bowl and let it steep for 1 minute. Pour onions into a colander, quench and drain.

Mix 100 g yogurt, 1 tablespoon mustard, 80 g salad mayonnaise and salt in a large bowl. Cut 120 g pickles into slices and mix in with 2 tablespoons pickle stock. Mix in the onions.

Rinse and peel potatoes well. Slice the potatoes and mix carefully with the yogurt sauce. Let the potato salad steep for at least 1 hour.

Heat 4-8 sausages and serve with mustard with the potato salad. Enjoy!
