Museum Barberini

With the Museum Barberini, supported by the Hasso Plattner Förderstiftung, there is now an art museum of the extra class in Potsdam. Directly opposite the Landtag, at the Old Market, the Palais Barberini, which had been destroyed during an air attack in 1945, was rebuilt with a historic facade. It is part of the reconstruction of one of the most beautiful squares in Europe and the historical center of Potsdam. The Barberini Museum was voted "Building of the Year" by the "City of Germany" association in January 2017 and is one of the most important current museum openings in Europe. Starting point for the presentations is the art collection of Hasso Plattner, whose collection focuses on Impressionism, American Modernism, the art of the GDR and painting after 1989. For the exhibitions of the house these works are combined with important loans from museums and private collectors from all over the world.

Already in the first year the museum Barberini shows five great exhibitions:

23 January to 28 May:
"Impressionism: The Art of the Landscape"     With masterpieces from Monet, Renoir to Caillebotte, the exhibition brings the great representatives of Impressionism to Potsdam and shows a still young, modern understanding of nature in the picturesque explorations.

"Liebermann, Munch, Nolde, Kandinsky" stretches an arc from Impressionism in Germany to Fauvism in Fankreich to international abstraction after 1945.

"Artists in the GDR From the collection of the Barberini Museum"     Two gallery rooms are opening the spectrum from Bernhard Heisig to Stefan Plenkers: one of the main focuses is the work of Wolfgang Mattheuer, whose bronze figure has found its permanent position in the garden of the Barberini Museum.

17 June to 3 October
"From Hopper to Rothko, America's Path to Modernity" is devoted to the development of American art from Impressionism to Abstract Expressionism. With masterpieces from the Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., the Barberini Museum is one of the most important private collections in the US that have so far rarely been seen in Europe.

28 October 2017 to 11 February 2018
"Behind the mask, artists in the GDR"     The exhibition focuses on the playing styles of artistic self-production in the GDR between roles and retreats, ordered collectivism and creative individuality.

Until 11 February 2018 also:
Palais Barberini. Stories of a house     In twelve chapters, the moving history of the house is told, as well as the architectural developments and different uses of the palace.

Daily (except Tuesdays) at 11 am and every Thursday at 6 pm, the Barberini Museum offers a public guided tour through the current exhibitions.
