New Chambers

In 1768, King Frederick the Great decided to have the orangery converted into a guest palace. Twenty years earlier, the original building was built by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, directly next to the Sanssouci Palace and designed to complement the ensemble of Sanssouci Palace and the Picture Gallery.

Besides the New Palace, the New Chambers now fulfilled the purpose of the guest palace for the King´s distinguished visitors. The guests should be exclusive received and accommodated. The New Chambers were therefore laid out to fit with four ceremonial halls and seven private suites (cavalier’s rooms). In terms of the interiors and décor, King Frederick´s building masters implemented the late style of Frederican Rococo, creating impressive compositions and elaborate embellishments, ranging from jewel to gold applications.
Despite the simple outside appearance, the New Chambers presents visitors a succession of elaborately decorated banquet rooms and suites. A highlight of the sequence of rooms is the square Jasper Hall at the center of the palace, lined with precious jasper and adorned with ancient busts. The room is crowned by a ceiling painting with a scene portraying Venus, who represented 18th century ideals of the paradigm of beauty. In the adjacent Ovid Gallery are rare gilded wall reliefs depicting scenes of the "Metamorphoses" from the Roman poet Ovid – one of Frederick the Great's favorite subjects.

The highlights of the luxuriously arranged guest apartments are two rooms completely lined in wood paneling ornamented with intarsia and the Green Lacquer Cabinet. Numerous paintings with 18th century views of the city of Potsdam enhance the exquisite decorative style of the interior design.
So resulted an impressive late work of the Frederician Rococo that continues to fascinate with its richly designed interiors its former guests and todays visitors.
